Three Things I Do Working Remotely To Keep Me Focused

As a management consultant, the team would work from the client site, on the plane, a bus, in the car, a coffee shop — anywhere the team needed to get things done. So when work fully transitioned to working from home, it was a nice break from the stresses of travelling, yet at the same time, I was prepared because I had been working remotely for several years before.

Here are the things I do to keep me focused while working remotely:

Stretch and activity breaks

One of the books I’m currently reading is Energize! by Michael Breus and Stacy Griffith. In the book, the authors recommend a 5 x 5 practice throughout the day to maximize your energy. 5 sets of 5 activities for 5 minutes throughout the day. These include stretching, shaking, bouncing, building, and balancing activities, for respectively upon waking up, mid-morning, mid-afternoon, evening, and then just before sleeping.

Binaural beats

When I really need to put my head down and focus, I go to Youtube and look up binaural beats. These seem to help my productivity better than lo-fi music or classical music (i.e., anything without words). I can’t explain why it makes me more productive but try it and you’ll see.

Lunch away from the workspace

Delineation of your workspace and your home space is important. If you eat where you work or if you do other activities in your workspace that isn’t work-related, you will start to feel like you are working all the time. One of the things I’m prioritizing in 2022 is rest. Michael Hyatt says rest is the foundation for good work — too often, we think rest is what we do at the end of a long day so we don’t give it the priority it deserves.
