Are you finding it difficult to get or stay motivated working from home? Here are six ideas to help inspire motivation based on what I learned doing research for my book Essential Habits:

  1. Get the fundamentals right. Eat healthy, sleep eight hours and be active every day.
  2. Keep your end goal in mind. Think about how great it will feel when you are finished. Find a way to reward yourself.
  3. Create a schedule. Find the routines and create a schedule that help ‘automate’ what you do and when you do it. This way, you do not have to decide what to do next.
  4. Take small steps. Motivation does not inspire action. Take action and then motivation will come. Take the smallest step towards your goal. Don’t feel like running on the treadmill? Run for one minute. Don’t feel like writing that book? Write one paragraph.
  5. Think positive. Fill your mind with positive thoughts. Don’t think that you are lazy or unproductive. If you cannot seem to take action, do not force it. Sleep early, get refreshed and then try it again the next day.
  6. Find accountability through friends. Check in with a friend or a co-worker on a daily basis. Ask them what they did that day. Make sure you have something to say.
