Looking back, I made a mistake not thinking about my career strategically. Let me backtrack to when I first graduated from university.

I thought I was smart, at least about the degree and the specialization I chose. Back in the early 2000s, I heard a lot about software developers, programming, and computer science, and so chose that as one of my specializations. I thought computer science was one of the few degrees I could graduate with a bachelor’s degree and get a job right away. It was difficult to do that with other degrees like English or Biology — you needed to do a Master’s or further schooling to be employable. When I graduated, it took some time before I found a job, but I found work as an Emerging Technologies Specialist. It wasn’t a super technical role like a software developer and had elements of business analysis in it, which I found to be a better fit with my skills. I chose the job without planning out what I wanted out of the job and what I wanted to work towards ten or twenty years later. This was a mistake.

Great career advice I should have heeded
