One of the tools I use as a project manager is a pre-mortem. It’s where we gather the project team and key stakeholders together and discuss the following scenario: we’re close to the end of the project and it has woefully not achieved all of the benefits and success we set out to do. What happened?

When we have these discussions, risks and issues are brought up that help us manage the project better. It’s interesting asking this at the beginning of the project as well because there’s no blame laid on anyone (nothing has happened yet) and people are generally not busy in the weeds of the project (so they’re able to zoom out and get some perspective on the project).

We can take the same approach to life. What are some typical problems we have later in life and what can we do ‘upstream’ to help prevent these downstream issues from happening?

  • The three top fatal diseases in Canada are cancer, heart disease and COVID-19.
  • General health concerns from being older.
  • Finances may be a concern later in life — especially if you don’t save enough or have a support network to help you.
