After reading hundreds, maybe even thousands of books, I have thought a lot about the practice of reading and how to improve that practice. Herein lies a few lessons I learned in enhancing understanding, having greater recall, and implementing what I have learned from reading.

Choose the right book to read

With hundreds of books being published every day, how do you know which book to devote your limited time and attention to?

My process is to develop a filter for potential books to read and then choose specific books through a proposed action.

My filter for potential books to read includes:

  • Recommendations from friends
  • Recommendations from trusted colleagues
  • Recommendations from trusted authors (see Dive down rabbit holes below)
  • Book recommendation lists and newsletters
  • What’s available at the library

From what’s available, and usually, I have a large anti-library of unread books, I read based on the following:

  • What problems am I facing in work, relationships or my personal life
