The first time I heard Tony Robbins talk about how better questions meant a better quality of life, I scoffed.

As a management consultant, my mindset was around providing answers. Answers to my boss about what’s happening on the project, how we’re mitigating risks, and why the team is or isn’t billing time to the project. Answers to my client about what this report means for their strategy, how to implement our recommendations, and what specific effort or resources are required. I was taught that not having the answers was akin to not being a good consultant so I worked weekends and evenings to ensure I was prepared with all the answers. I never wanted to get stuck with what I now know is a valid response: “I don’t know”

Slowly, I came to learn that good consultants know a lot of the answers, but the best consultants are the ones who ask the hard questions. Questions about previous work done by other consultants and why they were looking for more work by consultants. Questions about the organization’s…
